Not a lot of time tonight for cards, so just a quick post featuring a trio that I picked up earlier this year from an eBay seller in a large hand-picked lot of cards that I got at a buck a pop with free shipping...
I loved the 1st Day Issue parallels from Stadium Club back in the day. This was a time before autographed and game-used hits were common, so these one-per-box parallels were quite literally one of the most impressive cards you could hope to pull from a pack.
The '94 Stadium Club set in particular was a favorite, so I wasn't going to leave this one behind for someone else to snatch up. Love this shot of recent HOF inductee Pudge Rodriguez.
I've always thought of this set as the "torn paper, label maker" release, since the first name looks like a torn piece of paper and the last like something that was printed using one of those cheesy office label makers. Has a nice ring to it, anyway. I'm sure there are some who don't care for the design. I'm not exactly sure why it works for me, but it does. Might have something to do with the fact that I was in my prime pack-buying and trading years (age 11) when this one was released so it holds some good nostalgia value for me.
This one's also a 1st Day Issue parallel from 1994, but it's from the Stadium Club Team release. I don't care for these nearly as much as the "flagship" Stadium Club release, and Palmeiro is kind of a tainted name, but I couldn't resist picking this one up anyway.
Has he finally given up on his attempted return to MLB yet? Haven't heard anything in a month or two so I assume so. Moving on...
Closing out tonight's post is perhaps my favorite of the three, featuring speedster Kenny Lofton. Just a great card.
While not serial-numbered, I believe it is generally known that these were limited to 2,000 copies each (based on the fact that Topps printed 2,000 sets worth of cards on the first day of the print run). Doesn't sound all that rare by today's standards, but trust me these were tough to get your hands on in the '90s! They still demand a pretty penny on the secondary market to this day, especially big stars and HOFers, so I was pleased with this small little lot for a tidy $3.
Hope to pick up more of these in the future. I know Topps produced these same parallels for Stadium Club sets in other sports as well, do any of you have any of these in your collections?
Well, that's all I have time for tonight, thanks for stopping by as always!
"I loved the 1st Day Issue parallels from Stadium Club back in the day." Same here! A friend had a Frank Thomas First Day issue and we thought it was a bar of gold.
ReplyDeleteLove the Pudge with the sunglasses.
ReplyDeleteI've got a couple from the NBA. The 1993-94 set had the same holofoil stamp as the baseball set you feature here, the 1994-95 set just had the same gold foil as the rest of the gold foil on the base cards. I've got 5 combined from all years it was done, unfortunately, and none newer than 1994-95. I think I'll check COMC to see if I can add some more.
ReplyDeleteI've got some Browns First Day Issues, and have a couple incoming from a recent purchase. Still a lot more to go though.
ReplyDeleteI'm always looking for Pirate cards like this. Since the Pirates didn't have any high $ guys I've made it my mission to find as many obscure inserts and parallels as possible.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, the 'label maker' set.. Very nice dollar eBay buys!
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of 90's Stadium Club 1st Day Issue parallels. I'll pick them up here and there when I can find affordable hall of famers for my binder.
ReplyDeleteNice cards!
