Quarter Box Quartet - Long Day of Travel Edition

Commuted close to 300 miles today round trip for work. Not much time and pretty exhausted, so here's a quick quartet of cards from the quarter boxes at my local hobby shop...

I've wanted a copy of flamethrower Randy Johnson's final Topps flagship card for some time now.  So weird to see him with the Giants.  I love random photos like this, but I'm sure there are collectors who don't like the fact that you can't even see Randy's face on his last card.

I was drawn to this Fleer Legacy Bobby Clarke solely due to the ferocious, toothless look going on in the background image.  That is definitely a hockey player right there.

Pretty much any Topps Fan Favorites card is going into my stack for a quarter, even more so if it features the excellent 1976 Topps design.

Remember when Teemu Selanne was with the Sharks?  Me neither.

Hopefully I'll get something with a little more substance up this weekend, but not a bad little lot of four for the time being...

Quarter Box Quartet - Hand-drawn Mullet & Teemu

Another day, another four cards from the quarter box at my local hobby shop...

I don't recall having seen these Upper Deck MVP cards that use fan-drawn artwork before.  I didn't scan the back so I'm not sure how old the artist is here, but it's not the worst depiction of the D-Backs flamethrower (literally in this case).  Sort of second guessing why I picked this one out at this point.  Onward!

I've liked these UC3 Cyclone Squad inserts since the very first time I saw one over 20 years ago.  I'm not actively chasing the set or anything, but if I see one I don't have for a quarter it's definitely coming home with me.  As with so many modern cards, they look a lot better in person than they do in the scan.

Nice to see a little hockey in the mix of four cards that I grabbed randomly for this post.  I was 50/50 on whether I already had a copy of this one when I grabbed it, but I'm glad I went for it because it turns out I didn't.  I'm sure I probably had multiple copies of this card as a kid, but those are all long gone. 

In any event, I'm always happy to add a new Selanne to the collection, he was one of my favorite players to watch throughout his entire career, and was an effective goal scorer right until the end.  A rookie for a quarter was an easy buy.

Closing things out is the second Kenny Lofton card of this post!  Just another great addition to my small collection of minor league releases, which has really been picking up some steam lately.

Quarter Box Quartet - Roenick/Biggio/Esposito/Johnson

Huge work project today and tonight, no time for cards, so you get a scheduled post featuring four quarter box cards instead.  I will be back with some real content this weekend.  In the meantime, here's a dollar I'll never get back...

I'm not a Jeremy Roenick fan per se, but this is my first 2002-03 Topps Heritage card, which borrows its "TV set" design from the 1966-67 Topps set.

How about an incredibly loud Classic Craig Biggio card?  I know I've said this before, but I will basically pick up any mint Classic card of a star like Biggio that I don't already have if it's a quarter or less.

Like the Grant Fuhr from this set that I showed off in a previous post, this one was picked up solely because of the photograph that showcases the great mask and brown pads.

Closing it out is this fantastic black and white beauty featuring Walter Johnson's floating head.

Well, nothing earth-shattering there, but I've certainly spent $1 on much worse in this hobby before...

Quarter Box Quartet - Saturday Night No Time Edition

A quarter box and a dollar in my pocket; a match made in heaven...

This one was all about the mask, brown leg pads and wooden VIC stick.

Can't leave a T206 Wagner behind in a quarter box.  This is the closest I'll ever getting to owning an original.

I grabbed this Parkhurst Champions Wire Photo card not knowing whether I had a copy already or not.  Turns out I did.  Oh well, still a nice card of Luc Robitaille torching Sean Burke.

Turn of the century Stadium Club Ken Griffey Jr.  Because you don't leave a Stadium Club Griffey that you don't have behind in a quarter box.

Quarter Box Quartet - Satchel & Friends

My favorite thing to do on the rare (especially recently) trips I manage to make to my local card shop is to peruse the quarter boxes.  The cards I've plucked from the boxes have been building up and I've got a nice, healthy stack of them just waiting to be scanned.  I grabbed four at random, and they all happened to be retired baseball stars...

My favorite of this bunch by a long shot is this 1990 Swell Baseball Greats Satchel Paige.  Paige is one of my favorite players in the history of the game, and this is one fantastic oddball.  I believe the photograph is from Satchel's brief stint as pitching coach of the Atlanta Braves in 1969.  Also, those are some serious frames.

Another of my favorite players from baseball's past.  Who doesn't like Jackie Robinson?  I think this was an insert in the flagship 1996 Upper Deck set, but don't hold me to that.

The 1981 Topps Eddie Murray is an under-rated classic that was inexplicably missing from my collection for way too long.  When this mint copy turned up as I was thumbing through a stack of cards, I couldn't add it to my pile fast enough.  I don't know what's better, Satchel Paige's glasses or Eddie Murray's mutton chops?

Rounding out the quartet, a classic portrait shot of Bo Jackson from 1993 Topps.  Of course, this is the Topps Gold parallel, which is what sold me on the card.

A dollar well spent if you ask me!
