Card of the Day - 1962-63 Topps New York Rangers

So, posting has become rather sporadic lately. I'm getting married in a couple of weeks, so odds are things are going to continue that way for a while, at least until mid-June when we get back from the honeymoon.

Rather than post nothing at all though, I'm going to pretty much mail it in with some half-assed "card of the day" posts. First up is this "gently loved" beauty:

1962-63 Topps - #65 - New York Rangers Team

I actually bought this card almost two years ago (June of 2009) on eBay. I'm not really sure why I purchased it to be honest with you. There were only 120 total cards produced by the major companies in 1962-63 (66 by Topps, 54 by Parkhurst) so maybe I had a moment of weakness and thought that one day I'd own all 120 cards, so why not start with this one? Try finding a 1962-63 Topps checklist though (even a marked one) for less than $150 and you'll quickly see how delusional this line of thinking was.

In any event, it's got a couple of weak corners on the right side, but for $2.47 it's in good enough shape for me. Here's the back of the card:

The summary indicates that the Rangers had squeaked into the playoffs in 1961-62. The team would not be so lucky in 1962-63 though, finishing 5th out of 6 teams (only the Bruins were worse) and missing the playoffs.

While not my oldest hockey card, I believe this is my oldest team card.

They don't make cards like this anymore...

I absolutely love this set. This and the 73-74 release are two of my favorites, though I'll probably never finish either one of them.

It's a nice set. I've just crossed the 40-card threshold with it - but I've been avoiding the checklist and the toughest of all - Bobby Hull. That Hull will be a real beast in good shape.

'73-74 was fun. OPC had both a light and dark-back variation. Still debating trying for the master set.

1961-62 is one of the nicest of the era, though. The colours in that set are amazing.

Thanks for the comments guys. 40 cards is impressive, you're definitely getting there. I've only got 6 of them myself including this Rangers card, and the other 5 are pretty beat up...

If you like old hockey, that seems to be most of what I write about over here, even though it was originally meant to be more of a baseball blog.

I probably have a couple extra '62 Topps kicking around. I'll look.
